| Take Action for Peace! |
 |
|
Our international organization is committed
to promoting world peace through travel by
breaking down barriers and fostering
understanding. HI-USA is creating programs
to advance intercultural exchange, and we are
proud to announce that HI-USA, San Diego Council
has been chosen to host the first Hostelling
International Peace Building Conference in
March 2008. The conference will be targeted
to and organized by young adults (18-25 years
old).
The planning committee is forming now, and we
are looking for ten proactive, young adults
to be involved in laying the ground work for
the conference. Responsibilities include
choosing the theme, fostering community
involvement, developing the content and
coordinating the conference logistics.
We are also creating an advisory board of
interested adults to provide guidance and
resources for the planning committee. This
committee is open to all ages.
If you are interested in getting involved
please contact the council office at
619-338-9981 or by emailing
council@sandiegohostels.org.

Midnight Madness Rides Again |
|
|
|
This year marks the 34th anniversary of the
Midnight
Madness Fun Bicycle Ride. Starting in 1973 as a
tribute to Paul Revere's Midnight Ride, this
landmark
San Diego event has grown from a few hundred
local
riders to nearly 2,000 participants.
Midnight Madness
has truly become a renowned bicycle ride in
Southern
California.
Midnight Madness offers one of the most scenic
routes for bicyclists anywhere. Cycling
around Harbor
Island and Shelter Island offers riders
unique and
spectacular views of downtown San Diego.
Another
important feature of Midnight Madness is the
contests. A Light Up Your Bike and Costume
Contest
brings out the creative and zany side of
fun-loving
bicyclists.
In recent years, the Uptown Optimist Club of San
Diego managed Midnight Madness. 2007 marks the
return of this event to its original
organization,
Hostelling International-USA, San Diego Council
(formerly American Youth Hostels). The
Optimist Club
will continue their support of Midnight Madness.
Midnight Madness has always served as a major
fundraiser for programs that support the
important
work of non-profit organizations. This year's
proceeds from the ride support HI-San Diego's
Youth
Education and Outreach Programs. These programs
help HI-San Diego reach youth in the
community and
better fulfill the mission to help all,
especially the
young, gain a greater understanding of the
world and
its people through hostelling.
For more information please call 619-645-8068
Please stay tuned for the Midnight Madness
website.
